Industry kudos for Polartec
The new Polartec Power Shield Pro, a soft shell fabric that is made from a biobased nylon yarn and waterproof-breathable membrane, has picked up an R&D 100 Award for 2024.

A division of Milliken, Polartec recently revamped its popular Power Shield Pro range by shifting to a 100% nylon 6.6 monomaterial composition without sacrificing performance.

“We have been looking to integrate more plant-based synthetics in our ranges”, Ramesh Kesh, head of R&D, told WSA at Performance Days last March, referring to both polyester and polyamide. “We did not however want to integrate just 5% plant-based content, but rather that at least half of the polymer is derived from biomass by weight. We were also looking to offer the same level of performance.” The Biolon-based fabrics presented last March were made from 48% biobased content. The head of R&D for Polartec was expecting to be able to offer a 100% plant-based nylon by the end of the year.
