Encouragement for Renewcell at the end of October challenges

03/11/2023

Textile-to-textile recycling technology developer Renewcell, producer of textile waste dissolving pulp Circulose, had some happier news at the end of October following a challenging month.

In a market update at the start of the month, the Swedish company said sales volumes of Ciculose to fibre producers had been lower than expected. As a result, it said it was unlikely to break even this year.

In the days that followed, chief executive, Patrik Lundström, left the company, with Magnus Håkansson becoming acting chief executive with immediate effect while it searches for a permanent replacement.
The month ended, however, with the announcement that Renewcell has won the Nordic Council Environment Prize, an accolade presented every year by the inter-parliamentary body that encourages cooperation across the Nordic countries.

For the 2023 competition, the theme was sustainable textile production and consumption. The adjudication committee commented: “In a situation where we must first and foremost reduce consumption as well as extend the life of textiles and introduce circular business models, Renewcell’s pioneering process for recycling and reusing textile waste to make new textiles is key to closing the cycle in the textile industry and enabling a circular fashion industry.”

Head of strategy and sustainability at Renewcell, Martin Stenfors, accepted the award.
