Message for product designers from 3M at ISPO
Biodegradable materials, recyclable garments and “design at the intersection of performance and sustainability” are all areas of focus that will help the textile and apparel industry become more circular.
This was the main message from the sales manager in Asia for materials developer 3M, Totti Liang, at this year’s ISPO Academy Masterclass, which took place in Munich at the end of November.
“Landfills throughout the world are full of old clothes,” Mr Liang said during a workshop he hosted at the event. “If there’s one lesson I want young product designers to walk away with, it’s that circularity can help save our planet for future generations to enjoy.”
For the Masterclass, 3M provided samples of its Flowable Featherless Insulation material for design students to use in prototype garments. The material has at least 80% recycled content, and 3M presents it as a lightweight, high-loft, synthetic insulation for use in puffy garments.
