Funding news leads Eastman to unveil second molecular recycling plan
Specialty materials company Eastman is one of 33 businesses that the US department of energy has named as being eligible for funding under a programme called the Industrial Demonstrations Program (IDP).
The aim of IDP is to accelerate decarbonisation projects in energy-intensive industries and provide US manufacturers with a competitive advantage in “the race to lead the world in low- and net-zero carbon manufacturing”.
After receiving the news, which entitles it to negotiate for up to $375 million in funding, Eastman announced plans to build a new molecular recycling facility in Longview, Texas.
Its intention is to build a recycling facility with the capacity to recycle 110,000 tonnes of hard-to-recycle plastic waste at the new facility to create virgin-quality materials for textiles and packaging.
This will be the company’s second molecular recycling facility following its recent completion of a similar operation in Kingsport, Tennessee. Eastman has said it also plans to invest in another location in France.
