UIT welcomes ‘fast fashion’ law proposals, but asks about reprisals

French industry body l’Union des Industries Textiles (UIT) has welcomed steps that the authorities in France have taken to address the impact of fast fashion. It said, however, that it was disappointed that proposed new legislation seemed to take into account a small segment of the wider environmental challenges that the companies it represents face.

UIT describes itself as the voice of the textile industry in France. It brings together 23 different organisations that, in turn, represent 2,200 companies throughout the country.

It said that new proposed legislation that won approval in a vote in France’s national assembly on March 14 included welcome recognition of “the harm that ultra-fast fashion can cause”.

According to UIT, the proposed legislation frames the problem very well, but makes no provision for extra people or extra money to monitor what companies do and take action against them if their strategies in bringing clothing and textile products to market do too little to address the industry’s impact on the environment.
