Opportunity knocks for Teijin with new spun yarn

Teijin Frontier has said high-end outdoor brands are already embracing its new, hollow polyester spun yarn, Octa SF.

Brands have already put fabric made from the yarn into two-layer lightweight hiking jackets, using it in the lining in combination with soft, lightweight shell fabric in the outer layer.

Speaking to sportstextiles at Milano Unica on July 11, the fibres division of the Japanese group said it had also already begun showing fabrics that it believes will work well in baselayers.

The hollowness of Octa SF, plus the eight fins in its modified cross section help make fabrics that are light and breathable. When it launched Octa SF in June, it said this structure would also provide a soft, fluffy and gentle feel, as well as good levels of moisture-absorption and heat-retention.

Some of the fabrics it had on show at Milano Unica were as light as 130 grammes per square-metre. Teijin sales representative Ken Matsui said the company was aware that many customers were looking closely at lightweight fabrics for baselayers, often made using merino wool. “This new spun yarn could be our opportunity in this area,” he said.
