A Madrid-based private equity group, Alantra, has acquired a controlling stake in SPW fabrics, a specialist producer of textiles for sports and activewear.

Founded in 1997, Catalonia-based SPW has a portfolio of more than 200 fabrics made from polyester, polyamide and elastane, offering a range of functionalities including thermoregulation, weather-protection and compression. Le Coq Sportif, Puma, adidas and Rapha are among the company’s clients.

SPW’s founders will retain a significant stake in the company and will remain involved in the business.

The managing director of Alantra Private Equity, Fernando Ortega, described SPW as “a leader in a high-value niche”. He said Alantra’s aim was to help the fabrics manufacturer expand its business, boosted by a trend of apparel becoming more casual and more technical, and by the emergence of what he called new, niche sports.
