Size-inclusivity focused outdoor brand to close

Alpine Parrot, a California-based outdoor brand specialising in larger sizes, has announced that it is to close its doors.

Founder, Raquel Vélez, announced on social media platforms that she had reached the difficult decision not to continue the business.

She said she had founded Alpine Parrot in 2019 with the dream of creating clothes in which “people in bigger bodies” would feel comfortable and confident in the outdoors.

“We’ve challenged industry standards, celebrated diversity and built a community of adventurers who refuse to be limited by clothing sizes,” Ms Vélez said.

The brand came to have stockists in 12 US states, as well as in Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the UK. Stockists included retail group REI. The brand also set up its own e-commerce operation.

Raquel Vélez thanked the brand’s customers and said she wanted them to continue the discussion about size inclusivity in outdoor gear. “Keep advocating for change,” she said, “supporting inclusive brands, and enjoying the outdoors in whatever body you have.”
