Mass balance will add value to acrylic staple fibre, Toray says

19/03/2025

Toray Industries has announced that it will adopt the mass balance approach in manufacturing its Toraylon acrylic staple fibre. It will apply this from April 2025.

The company explained that it has been working for some time to use recycled and bio-based materials in its fibre production to be able to present them as more environmentally responsible than earlier versions of the products.

It explained that acrylic fibres have presented a particular challenge in this respect “because of a lack of waste resource”.

A mass balance approach is one in which the characteristics of different raw materials are attributed to part of a product in line with input proportions. Toray said this will allow it to offer high-value-added Toraylon.
