Handheld textile ID technology to go on display at Brussels event
BASF will have a presence at the 2025 Textiles Recycling Expo, which takes place in Brussels on June 4 and 5.
It will showcase Loopamid, the polyamide 6 (PA6) made 100% from textile waste that it launched in 2024. Visitors to the event will also be able to engage with Trinamix, a BASF subsidiary that develops mobile spectroscopy solutions.
The group announced a first commercial Loopamid plant at the end of March. The production facility at its Caojing site in Shanghai has capacity to produce 500 tonnes of Loopamid per year. The feedstock will include cutting scraps, defective cuts, offcuts and other production textile waste from the textile industry, plus post-consumer waste.
A mobile near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy solution developed by Trinamix is part of the operation for producing Loopamid. BASF has said it enables fast, reliable and non-destructive identification of a wide range of textiles and blends, including polyester, cotton, wool and polyamide.
Specifically, it has used the technology, which will be on display at the event in Brussels, to qualify PA 6 waste streams for their suitability in Loopamid production.
Users can choose between a compact handheld device for spot checks or a semi-automated set-up that can be integrated into a sorting table, allowing for automatically triggered scans for enhanced efficiency.
“We are excited to be at the Textiles Recycling Expo for the first time and meet the vibrant community there,” said Trinamix’s team lead for the circular economy, Adrian Vogel. “Our solution promotes transparency and empowers informed decision-making throughout the textile value chain by providing reliable on-the-spot identification.”
He said Trinamix was making the technology “accessible to everyone dedicated to creating a more sustainable future for textiles”.
