Competitor countries hope to gain from India’s tariff pain

Exporters of textiles and garments in Bangladesh and Vietnam have expressed hope they might gain export business in the US market.

In its monthly report for August, cotton industry information resource Cotlook said reports from local contacts, particularly in Vietnam, were already suggesting an increase in interest.

This comes after the US placed tariff levels of 50% on imports from India. There is a pause on high rates on exports from China, but only until November.

Cotlook said a measure that will offer a tariff reduction on finished products containing US materials was also driving a higher level of interest in US cotton.
