Seaqual launches ocean-minded non-profit
The Seaqual Initiative has, since 2016, created a framework to clean up oceans, by supporting fishing communities, and integrated the plastics retrieved in polyester yarns. The organisation based in Girona, Spain is now looking to step up its commitment to healthy ocean ecosystems with the creation of a non-profit foundation.
Through the Seaqual Foundation, brands can contribute to programmes selected by the organisation, such as regenerating seagrass or protecting turtles’ habitats, which offer various tax incentives.
These projects are located adjacent to the plastic collection points, providing a holistic solution for the territories where the waste is being removed from the ocean.
“We have selected projects where we personally know the people behind them. For them, the ocean is not just water, it is identity, legacy, and lifeblood,” François Devy, director of operations for the Seaqual Initiative, tells Sportstextiles.
Brands are finding creative ways to engage their customers, as seen at French cycling brand Velor. It launched a challenge on Strava with the Seaqual Foundation: for every 100 km a participant rides, the brand will donate €10 to the foundation.
