Innovation in series at Nike

The Portland-based sports equipment giant is introducing four innovative products this month.

In the textile category, Nike is introducing a cooling technology called Aero-FIT. The knitted structure, a combination of lightweight mesh and “elliptical mesh” zones, is said to double the airflow of traditional Nike athletic apparel. It is also the brand’s first performance apparel made from 100% chemically recycled textile waste.

With Therma-FIT, Nike is offering what it said is dynamic warmth, thanks to a system of baffles that the wearer can inflate or deflate to adjust temperature in real time. The Air Milano Jacket is the first product to feature the air-based technology, but it builds on the legacy of an inflatable jacket, the ACG Airvantage, which used a similar technology introduced by Gore some 20 years ago.  Members of the USA Olympic team will be wearing the Air Milano this winter in Milan as part of their official medal ceremony look.

In the footwear category, Nike is introducing two shoes that activate sensory receptors in the feet and are believed to promote focus. With robotics specialist Dephy, the brand is revealing a first iteration of Project Amplify, an assisted system for running or walking which is in early phase of development.
