Back to where it all began for Berghaus
A special display of past and present Berghaus products has gone on display at the place where the brand’s history began.
Berghaus was the brainchild of two climbing enthusiasts from north-east England, Peter Lockey and Gordon Davison. They first turned their hobby into their jobs by opening the region’s first specialist outdoor shop, the LD Mountain Centre, on Dean Street in Newcastle.
In addition to running the shop, the two also began to distribute to other retailers in the UK outdoor clothing they brought in from Germany and Austria. They decided to call this distribution part of the business Berghaus.
Soon, they also began to develop products of their own, under the same brand name and, from there, they built up Berghaus’s standing in the global market.
The LD Mountain Centre opened in 1966 and, to mark the sixtieth anniversary of both businesses, the store has now put its special collection of Berghaus products on display.
Berghaus senior vice-president, Charlie Pym, said: “Berghaus wouldn’t exist if Peter Lockey and Gordon Davison hadn’t opened their store on Dean Street, and it’s wonderful to see the brand showcased in this way in the place where it was born.”
LD Mountain Centre managing director, Roddy Mackay, commented: “We share an extraordinary heritage that began here on Dean Street. From the early days of developing innovative gear upstairs in the shop through to today a spirit of innovation and passion for the outdoors has remained at the heart of everything we do.”
