Honeywell uses Spectra fibre from Innovative Textiles
US-based technology company Honeywell International’s has reported that it has secured a contract to supply its Spectra fibre to Innovative Textiles for use in its Power Pro fishing The long-term supply contract is expected to be worth $45 million.
Spectra fibre is said to make the fishing line easier to use, cast more smoothly, and last longer and can be used for both deep sea and fresh water environments. The material is made of polyethylene and has one of the highest strength-to-weight ratios of any synthetic fibre, including nylon, polyester and aramid. Its extra-thin diameter makes it up to four or five times thinner than equivalent strength nylon monofilament. The fibre is ten times stronger than steel on a weight basis, yet light enough to float.
Commonly referred to as ‘superlines’, low-stretch, small-diameter fishing lines, such as Power Pro, have grown dramatically in popularity during the past decade.
