Chinese investment sees textile factory in Ghana re-open

As part of the government’s strategy to boost struggling industries, Ghana’s President Kufuor has officially re-opened a textile factory in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region.

Volta Star Limited (formerly Juapong Textiles Limited) is now being operated as a joint partnership between the government and U-Rich Limited, a Chinese textiles and garments firm. The facility currently employs some 185 people, including five management staff from China, and could see up to 800 staff working there if full capacity is achieved.

Juapong Textiles Limited was established as a public-private partnership in 1968 to produce greybaft, but was forced to close some 18 months ago when the company that owned it went into liquidation.
