Turkish fabric firm commits to Better Cotton

21/11/2012
Turkish knit fabric manufacturer Yesim Tekstil has become a member of the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), the Geneva-based non-profit organisation that works to promote greater sustainability in cotton production around the world.

Last year Yesim Tekstil and its supplier Kipas signed a strategic partnership agreement to purchase yarn produced in sustainable conditions. As part of this commitment, it will now source cotton from producers who are also members of BCI and encourage its customers to do the same.

Yesim Tekstil has been a production partner of Nike’s since 2005 and also manufactures for Gap, Lands’ End, Old Navy, Esprit, Hugo Boss, Tchibo and Schlafgut.

The company employs around 3,000 people in its production facilities ain Bursa in north-west Turkey.

BCI aims to reduce the environmental impact of cotton production, to improve livelihoods and economic development in cotton-producing areas, to improve commitment to and flow of ‘Better Cotton’ throughout the supply chain and to ensure the credibility and sustainability of the initiative.

In 2010-11, farmers in four countries (Brazil, India, Mali and Pakistan) produced their first harvests of ‘Better Cotton’.
