While it has been used in sportswear since its launch in 2009, it is now being used in footwear, fashion and denim. US outdoor brand Timberland has chosen it for a denim line and as well as boots, and sportswear brands Asics and New Balance have also adopted the product.
This was the first year that S.Café had a dedicated booth at textile fair Premiere Vision, held this week in Paris.
The company says S.Café has odour-control properties, adds UV protection and is fast-drying.
"We like the sustainability story of people being able to drink the coffee - and, later, wear it," said Singtex sales director Gene Hu.
The ‘S’ in S.Café stands for “simple”, in reference to the manufacturing process. The coffee beans are recycled – they are collected from 7-Eleven convenience stores and Starbucks across Taiwan. The ground coffee and recycled bottles are used to create a yarn.
“We only have one earth and we all need to protect it,” said Jason Chen, general manager of Singtex and the brains behind the concept.
