Outlast develops PCM polyester fill for jackets

Phase change materials (PCM) producer Outlast will present its latest development, its first PCM polyester fibre fill, at the upcoming Techtexil show in Frankfurt.

Martin Bentz, managing director of Outlast Europe, said: “This is another milestone for us and we are proud of this new, high-performing development, which helps regulate the climate in an optimum way.”

Some brands have begun to use the polyester as filling for duvets, pillows or sleeping bags. “But we are also looking at the apparel market,” explained Mr Bentz. “Outlast is planning to develop a new fibre fill as insulation for jackets and other products.”

Tests with independent system THG SleepView by German consultancy C Russ indicated a duvet with an Outlast PCM fibre fill can reduce absolute humidity by 48% compared with a traditional duvet. “This is an impressive added value,” added Mr Bentz, “which demonstrates the proactive way our technology works."

Outlast technology was originally developed for NASA to protect astronauts from temperature fluctuations in space using PCM that absorb, store and release heat for thermal comfort.

Techtextil runs from 11 to 13 June.
