Adidas ties up new deal with Flamengo

Sports brand adidas has agreed a new 10-year sponsorship deal with Brazilian football club Flamengo.

Rio de Janeiro-based Flamengo first had adidas as a kit provider and sponsor in 1980, an arrangement that lasted for 12 years. Umbro took over in 1992, to be replaced by Nike between 2000 and 2009, followed by Brazilian brand Olympikus between 2009 and 2012.

With this new agreement, adidas has said it wants to place Flamengo among its “select group of top-tier global clubs”, which includes AC Milan, FC Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Real Madrid.

Fernando Basualdo, president of adidas Brazil, said at the time of the announcement: “Our return to Flamengo is a major milestone in our history and a natural strategy at this important time.” This is a reference to the world’s sporting spotlight focusing strongly on Brazil in the next few years as the country hosts the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and the Summer Olympics in Rio in 2016.

Eduardo Bandeira de Mello, Flamengo’s president, said the deal would help Flamengo become better known internationally. He said: “We are very proud to have adidas with us once again.”
