Patagonia’s biorubber plant heads for commercialisation

Guayule was used by outdoor brand Patagonia at the end of last year to make an ‘allergy-free’ wetsuit, and Yulex wants to commercialise it for large-scale production, according to the Arizona Daily Star.
Guayule latex doesn't contain the proteins that people can be allergic to in common latex, and it has been touted as an alternative to natural rubber, which is vulnerable to price swings in the commodity markets.
The newspaper reported Italian chemical company Versalis has been granted a licence to process the guayule, and talks are under way with undisclosed parties to build a 50,000-metric-ton plant in Europe.
