US: Outdoor sales improve in July

15/08/2013
Sales of outdoor products in the US increased 2.6% in fiscal July to $810.3 million, according to data provider OIA VantagePoint.

Apparel sales increased 9.5% to $152.4 million for the month, driven primarily by outerwear sales - much of it pre-season liquidation - and, to a lesser extent, rain gear and sportswear.

Outdoor footwear sales posted a steeper decline in July versus the recent trend, down 12.4% to $190 million. Most footwear categories declined for the month, with the exception of technical hiking, which was the only category to post positive growth.

Sales of hardgoods increased 7.9% to $467.9 million, a similar level of growth as June. Sales of camping equipment, one of the largest segments within hardgoods, maintained a strong growth rate for the month.
