Pope Francis’s native country, Argentina, is still in the tournament, but because the pope is an enthusiastic football fan Lotto thought he might also like to own one of the shirts its sponsored team, Costa Rica, has worn in the competition.
Before Costa Rica’s first knock-out match against Greece at the end of June, Lotto president, Andrea Tomat, travelled to Rome to hand over the personalised shirt to Costa Rica’s ambassador to Italy, Jaime Feinzaig, and its ambassador to the Vatican, Fernando Sánchez Campos, for the diplomats to hand over to the Pope.
Costa Rica won the match against Greece in a penalty shoot-out and will now face the Netherlands in the quarter-finals. Mr Tomat said the whole Lotto team had followed with great interest Costa Rica’s progress in the tournament so far and been delighted by its performances and its success.
The other smaller brand with an ongoing interest in the competition is Swiss sports company Burdda, which supplies kit to the Belgian national team. Adidas and Nike have three quarter-finalists each on their team rosters: Colombia, Argentina and Germany for adidas and Brazil, the Netherlands and France for Nike. All Puma-wearing teams have been knocked out.
