Adidas signs record Manchester United deal

Adidas has signed a 10-year deal with Manchester United for £750 million, beginning with the 2015/2016 season.

Nike last week pulled out of its 13-year sponsorship, saying the proposed deal did not offer “good value” for shareholders. It will continue in its role of technical sponsor and trademark licensee for next season (2014/15).

Nike has been paying United £23.5m a year, and the new deal is worth a world record £75m a season to the English club.

Adidas appears to be staking its claim to the football market, after a marketing and sales battle with its rival for World Cup spoils.

Its CEO, Herbert Hainer, said: "Our new partnership with Manchester United clearly underlines our leadership in football and will help us to further strengthen our position in key markets around the world.
