Nike gets in on the act
Sports brand Nike appeared to have lost out in its bitter battle against main rival adidas for prominence in the FIFA World Cup.

In the semi-finals, two Nike-wearing teams, host nation Brazil and the Netherlands, were drawn against two adidas teams, Germany and Argentina. Both adidas teams won and disputed the final on July 13. In addition, adidas secured extra publicity by supplying the offical World Cup ball the Brazuca, and trophies for the best goalkeeper, best player and top goal-scorer at the tournament.

However, the fact the only goal of the final was scored by Germany’s Mario Götze provided Nike with some solace. In 2012, Mario Götze became a Nike-sponsored athlete and has been part of several campaigns since then.

Nike was pleased and relieved that the boot that struck the winning blow was a Nike boot.
