The chief executive of outdoor brand Vaude, Antje von Dewitz, was one of the industry figures who joined German development minister, Gerd Müller, at the launch of a new body called the Textiles Alliance on October 16.

In a statement, Germany’s ministry for economic co-operation and developmentsaid the aim of the alliance, launched one-and-a-half years after the incident at Rana Plaza in Bangladesh, is to achieve “concrete improvements in social and environmental standards in the textiles and garment industry”.

“We all agree that we do not wish to have clothes touching our bodies that have been produced in places where human rights are being trampled underfoot and people are being exploited and poisoned,” the minister said. “With our alliance for fairness, in addition to sending a visible signal, we are also taking the first step towards implementing these improvements, together, step by step, starting today.”

About 30 companies and organisations signed up to the alliance on the first day.
