No live plucking in Patagonia down supply chain

Outdoor brand Patagonia has emphasised that its down jackets and other products containing down use no feathers from birds that are plucked while still alive.

Using social media, Patagonia said in early November that the birds in its supply chain are raised primarily for meat. “Down and feathers are just a byproduct of that industry,” the company said. It said the down it uses is 100% traceable.

This supply chain involves a parent farm where parent birds lay eggs that are then transported to a hatchery to incubate and hatch. Newly hatched birds then spend about four months on a second farm being raised. From there, they go to the slaughterhouse with their meat going into the human food chain.

Patagonia made it clear that third-party inspectors monitor every step of this supply chain.
