Spain’s cotton exports to top €1 billion for first time

24/11/2014
A cotton industry association in Spain, Aitpa, has said it expects 2104 cotton export revenues to be 9% higher than in 2013 and to surpass €1 billion for the first time ever.

This figure includes revenues from exports of cotton fabric, yarn and fibre. Almost all of Spain’s cotton crop is grown in the warm, southern region of Andalusia. Although an end to subsidies for cotton farmers has meant a considerable reduction from 2005-2006 levels, Spanish cotton farmers produced more than 340,000 tonnes, Spain still accounts for 19% of all cotton fibre grown in the European Union and is the European Union’s second-biggest producer (after Greece).

Aitpa said an increase in cotton fabric production had contributed to much of the growth in the industry in 2014.
