Spanish footwear exports suffer surprise dip

05/05/2016
Exports of Spanish footwear decreased 6.9% in February compared to the same period last year, the first drop in nearly three years. It was the worst February since 2009 when footwear exports dipped 7.2%

Total footwear exports were valued at €272 million, down from €283 million in February 2015, according to the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade. Total shoe exports in 2015 were €2.9 billion.

A fall in exports to France, Spanish footwear’s biggest market, was the principal cause of the drop. February marked the first month since 2009 that exports to the country decreased, registering a drop of 7.54% to €61 million.

There was also a double-digit drop in sales to Germany, the UK, Portugal, Belgium, the Netherlands, Japan and Poland. Exports to the US were up 20.6% whilst Italy, Spain’s second largest market for footwear, showed growth of 12.6%. Mexico continued its development as an important market with sales of €4 million, an increase of 30.67%.
