How many times can you bend a wool fibre without breaking it?

Merino marketing and research body The Woolmark Company has put a figure on the number of times you can bend a wool fibre before it breaks.

In a statement to highlight the natural elasticity of wool, the Sydney-based organisation said a wool fibre can be bent up to 20,000 times before breaking; meaning wool apparel retains its high-quality ‘as new’ look and feel for longer.

“Merino wool is naturally elastic and sheds creases,” The Woolmark Company said, “due to its unique structure and crimp. At microscopic levels, merino fibres are like coiled springs, returning to their original state when the stretch is released. This means there is less chance of garments sagging or losing their shape.”
