Huntsman reveals a plan for saving 820 billion litres of water per year

Dyes and chemicals manufacturer Huntsman Textile Effects has said that its Avitera SE polyreactive dyes can help textile mills reduce their water consumption by up to 50%.

In the build-up to World Water Day on March 22, 2015, Huntsman Textile Effects said that if the entire textile industry began using Avitera SE, the saving in water could, potentially, be 820 billion litres of water per year.

Up to 100 litres of fresh water, and high amount of energy, is required to dye one kilogramme of cotton fabric, the company said, adding: “Much of this water ends up contaminated by the salt used to promote the absorption of the dye. This wastewater is difficult to treat, and it cannot be safely consumed or used for irrigation, and it is harmful to aquatic life.”

It said Avitera SE and other dyes in the same range, which it introduced in 2011, are absorbed by textile fibres more rapidly, using less salt during dyeing and less water during the wash-off process.
