Qmilk wins “environmental Oscar”
17/04/2015
Qmilk makes textiles from casein, a fibre derived from milk protein. It uses only milk that is not fit for human consumption. Managing director, Anke Domaske, has said that approximately 20% of all the milk produced in Europe fails to satisfy strict food standards and is considered waste. She founded Qmilk in 2011 after reading about casein’s skin-friendly properties.
Two German engineers, Marco Voigt and Sven Krüger, founded the GreenTec Awards in 2008 with the aim of creating an environmental award “as significant and far-reaching as the Oscars”. They have named Qmilk as the winner in their Production category for 2015.
What caught their attention was Qmilk’s zero-waste process, which can produce a kilo of biopolymer in only five minutes and consuming a maximum of only two litres of water. They presented Ms Domaske with her award at a ceremony in Hannover.
