EU takes over as Cambodia’s biggest textile export market

17/06/2015
Cambodian textile and apparel industry association Gmac has reported export values of $5.3 billion in 2014, an increase year on year of 7.6%, a slower rate of growth than the industry has witnessed in Cambodia since 2010.

Another point of note in the Gmac analysis of the industry’s 2014 performance is that the European Union took a greater share of Cambodia’s textile exports, 41.6%, than the US, which had a 34.8% share. Until now, the US has always been the main buyer of Cambodian textiles and apparel.

Half a million people work in textiles and apparel in Cambodia and it’s the second-largest contributor to the country’s economy after tourism. The sector accounts for an estimated 80% of all Cambodian exports by value.
