Unions urge brands to support workers’ rights appeal in Cambodia

The Clean Clothes campaign has asked brands that source in Cambodia to throw their weight behind a campaign that will help unions in the country.

The Cambodian government is drafting a new Trade Union Law aimed at regulating the 3,400 trade unions but the association is concerned it infringes on freedom of association and trade union autonomy.

It said: “We strongly urge brands sourcing from Cambodia to publicly support freedom of association and independent unions in Cambodia. Such a statement will show that you take your due diligence responsibility seriously and would be a clear signal to the Cambodian government to ensure the basic rights of unions and their members.”

Organisations that are supporting the campaign include Industri Energi (Norway), Workers United, (US), International Labour Rights Forum (US), Textile Clothing & Footwear Union of Australia and Fair Action (Sweden).
