Myanmar becomes a top-20 apparel supplier to the EU

In new figures released by industry body Euratex, the European Union’s results for textiles and apparel in the first nine months of 2015 showed an increase, of 0.5% and 1.5% respectively, and employment in the sector went up slightly too.

However, imports from outside the EU showed much greater increases over the same period, with a rise of 8.9% in textiles and of 10.6% in apparel in terms of value.

Over the nine-month period, China recorded a 7.4% increase in the value of its clothing exports to the EU at €23 billion. In second place, Bangladesh recorded a 24.5% increase and there were strong upturns for Cambodia (31%), Pakistan (26%), Vietnam (25%) and India (11%). With a 75% increase, Myanmar is now part of the top-20 EU’s clothing suppliers.
