Factory owners to resist wage increase in Cambodia

19/08/2015
Garment factory owners in Cambodia have said they intend to reject demands for an increase in workers’ minimum wage in 2016, Reuters has reported.

It said the development, which came out of a survey of employers in the sector, makes labour disputes likely in the later part of this year.

In the survey, almost 90% of members of the Garment Manufacturers’ Association in Cambodia (GMAC), said they supported no wage increase at all for 2016 or a small increase of between $1 and $5 per month for each worker.

Minimum wages in the sector at the moment are $128 per month; unions have asked for this to go up to $177 per month next year.

Around 600,000 people now work in garment factories in Cambodia.
