Spacetex 2030 finalists chosen

05/08/2015
A specialist jury has selected ten students as finalists for a clothing design competition called Spacetex 2030. The competition is aimed at designing everyday clothing that astronauts can wear inside a space station on long-term missions such as the proposed mission to Mars in 2030.

Entries came from three different universities. The judging panel comprised Dr Jan Beringer, the head of research and development at the department of function and care at the Hohenstein Institute, representatives of Schoeller Textil and Dr Klaus Jansen, the managing director of Berlin-based research association Forschungskuratorium Textil.

Judges were looking for an understanding of the requirements for the clothing, ideas on how to meet them, design innovation and vision. In addition, they assessed the performance characteristics and the design itself and the application of materials and processing techniques.

Finalists will now be provided with high-tech materials from Schoeller Textil with which they will create their designs over the next few months. In the autumn, one male and one female outfit will be chosen by the jury and the winners will be announced. There is a prize of €3,000 for the students who win.
