Ovis 21 withdraws certification from “cruel treatment” sheep farm

Patagonian merino wool supplier Ovis 21 has withdrawn certification from a farm that featured in a video published by a campaign group showing poor practice in animal care. Ovis 21, which has been a supplier since 2013 to outdoor brand Patagonia, said in a statement that the “violent and cruel treatment of lambs and sheep” depicted in the video was unacceptable.

However, it said it was a matter of “deep regret” that the campaign group involved had waited until this month to bring the matter to light having shot the footage in December 2014. It said it would have taken action immediately if the campaign group had shared the information with Ovis 21 at the time.

The Ovis 21 network comprises more than 160 properties spread across a huge area of land in southern Argentina and Chile. It said on making its statement on the campaign group’s video that it remains committed to managing a certification programme that works hard for improvements in grasslands, in flock management and in wool quality.

“Livestock farming practices have a relevant role as a tool to improve biodiversity and the ecosystems required to produce food and fibre for an increasing world population and to generate the best environment for wildlife, rural families and their communities,” it said.
