Patagonia CEO to join leaders in Paris during COP21
Patagonia CEO Rose Marcario will discuss the role of consumers at International New York Times’ Energy for Tomorrow Conference, part of the COP21 climate events in Paris in early December.
She will appear on a panel with IKEA CEO Peter Agnefjäll entitled The Consumer Pickle, moderated by Charles Duhigg, a senior editor at The New York Times.
The panel will explore the role consumers can play in transitioning to a “low-carbon world” through their buying and ownership habits.
Marcario has advocated the need for businesses and customers to share the responsibility of reducing overall consumption – and asserted that such a philosophy does not contrast with business success.
Marcario will also discuss Patagonia’s use of a concept called Planetary Boundaries – developed by the Stockholm Resilience Center based on the research of 28 internationally renowned scientists – as a guide to help the company look toward 2050 and determine what initiatives it should be prioritizing as a business to help solve the environmental crisis. Planetary Boundaries sets out nine precautionary boundaries for critical areas of change, such as climate change, ocean acidification, land-system change, biosphere integrity, and others.
