The global head of textile coatings at polymer producer Covestro, Nick Smith, has collaboration with other companies in the textile value chain is helping his company, formerly called Bayer MaterialScience, find new ways of applying its knowledge of textile chemistry.

Speaking at the 2015 Manufacturers’ Forum of the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry (WFSI), Mr Smith said that when companies work together, they can “break down the barriers to innovation”.

He said that even though his company is a supplier of raw material for fabrics and commands relatively little consumer attention, it makes good sense for brand owners to collaborate with Covestro. He explained that coating technology such as his company’s Insqin range can expand the capabilities of any fabric. “Users value this very much,” he told the conference audience.

As examples, he said some partners have already found ways of creating 3D printing effects on fabrics using only a few layers of coating, while others have enhanced the performance of the fabrics they use by increasing their capacity for elongation.

“Every collaboration we do yields new possibilities, new things we can do with the chemistry,” he said.
