Pakistan could be on course for the smallest cotton crop this century

Analysts of the global cotton market have said the output estimates of several major producing countries were considerably down at the end of 2015 in comparison to previous years.

Specialist industry publication Cotlook said in its monthly report for December 2015 that deliveries of cotton from farmers during the second half of November in Pakistan were “lagging significantly” behind the figures for 2014, and have remained sluggish. Cotlook’s current number implies the smallest volume of cotton produced in this century in the Asian country.

Pakistan produced around 15 million bales of cotton in the 2014-2015 growing season. Cotton accounts for around 55% of Pakistan’s total exports.

It’s the fiftieth anniversary in 2016 of the launch of the Cotlook A Index, which is widely regarded as a reliable barometer of global raw cotton prices.
