Brands pitch in to bring children to snow sports

The Federation of the European Sporting Goods Industry (FESI) joined forces with the International Ski Federation (FIS) to introduce children to snow sports at a special event in Norway in February. The week-long initiative followed a memorandum of understanding that the two organisations signed in 2014.

With Lillehammer, which hosted the 1994 Winter Olympics, as the venue, FESI said it hoped for 20,000 participants over the seven-day period. It secured the support of a number of prominent ski brands, including Tecnica, Fischer, Nordica, Atomic and Salomon, who hosted two-hour teaching sessions with free use of equipment and advise from technical personnel.

“The objective is to seize every opportunity to get youth acquainted with outdoor activities and to introduce them to the endless possibilities of snow-sports and alpine skiing,” said René Harrer, chairman of FESI’s ski committee.

FESI’s secretary general, Alberto Bichi, added that the organisation’s mission is to promote physical activity and “continuously create opportunities for children who otherwise would be excluded”. He thanked the ski-industry for its support.
