Arena launches new Powerskin swimsuit in time for Rio 2016

Arena Water Instinct, the Italian sports brand whose Powerskin Carbon-Pro product dominated the swimming events at the 2012 London Olympics, has developed a new range, Powerskin Carbon-Ultra, for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Swimmers wearing Powerskin Carbon-Pro suits won 35 medals in London, including ten gold medals, and beat four world records. Now, with the help of Cambridge-based consultancy Innovia Technology, it has developed the new Powerskin Carbon-Ultra with a view to helping its athletes equal or better the successes of 2012.

The Carbon-Ultra incorporates a ‘carbon cage’ shell to maximise hydrodynamics and a system “to optimise the athlete’s physiology”.

At the time of the launch, Andy Milton, an innovation consultant at Innovia, described the swimsuit as a “design breakthrough”. He said: “We integrated deep knowledge of the physiology and mechanics of swimming with insights into apparel development. This embraced fluid mechanics, material science, physiology and psychology. As a result, we were able to provide Arena with options for the design of the suit, including guidelines for fabric construction, and also advice for communicating the benefits of the technology effectively to professionals.”

Athletes will wear the Powerskin Carbon-Ultra at the 2016 European Aquatics Championships in London in May in advance of Rio 2016.
