Workers’ representatives want Patagonia to acquire Polartec

A trade union representing Polartec workers in Lawrence, Massachusetts, has composed a letter asking outdoor brand Patagonia to acquire the company; it has invited its members to sign and send it to Patagonia chief executive, Rose Marcario.

Current owner, private equity firm Versa Capital Management, has announced plans to end production at the Polartec plant in Lawrence, Massachusetts, by the end of 2016 and to make the company’s fleece, softshell and other fabrics in Tennessee instead. Versa Capital bought Polartec in 2007.

In the letter to Ms Marcario, trade union Unite Here pays tribute to Patagonia’s “approach to finding business solutions to social and environmental problems” and asks it to turn the threat of closure and loss of jobs in New England “into something remarkable and inspiring”.

It goes on to mention the “decades-long deep and collaborative relationship” between Patagonia and Polartec, and says the Lawrence-based company is one of only a few remaining manufacturers with ties to New England’s textile tradition.
