Water-resistant down manufacturer Sustainable Down Source (SDS), known as Down Decor until January 2016, has named Caroline Zapf as its first chief sustainability officer. Cincinnati-based SDS is the creator of hydrophobic down DownTek.

The company said that the appointment of a chief sustainability officer is a further step in its commitment to the “advancement of sustainable practices, traceability and responsibility in the feather and down industry”.

Ms Zapf helped with the implementation in 2013 of the Responsible Down Standard and worked alongside the Sustainable Apparel Coalition on the HIGG Index. She has also spent time collaborating with Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC).

Sustainable Down Source president, Daniel Guigui, praised Ms Zapf’s “unwavering commitment to the responsible and sustainable practices” within the industry. He added that the company wanted a “dedicated, passionate sustainability leader” for the newly-created role.
