NikeLab store opens in Tokyo
Sportswear manufacturer Nike has opened a NikeLab store in Tokyo, Japan, the seventh such location it has unveiled.

NikeLab was launched in June 2014. It offered the brand’s latest product innovations and collaborative collections. NikeLab stores are now located New York, London, Paris, Milan, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Nike sees them as an opportunity to experiment in retail design and “explore sustainable materials, adaptable furnishings and various local integrations”.

The Tokyo store, which will be known as NikeLab MA5, opened on December 1. Nike made efforts to ensure it contains references to Japanese culture and traditions. The brand worked with architect and long-term partner Arthur Huang to do this. The store’s fitting rooms featured tatami mat floors and walls made from locally sourced wood.

Nike says the focus of the store is to unite nature and technology. As part of this, it designed a store that engages the senses through interior and exterior directional sound systems and a scent exclusive to the store. These is also a soft track flooring material made using Nike Grind, a mix of recycled and regenerated materials.
