Techtextil 2017 to take inspiration from space travel

The 2017 editions of trade fairs Techtextil and Texprocess (May 9-12) will focus on the applications for technical textiles in the aerospace sector.

It is the result of a collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) and the German Aerospace Centre (DLR). The fairs will take place under the heading ‘Living in Space’.

“Space fascinates people all over the world. All our space missions are backed by many years of research and innovation in which new materials and processing technologies played a decisive role”, said Frank Salzgeber, head of the ESA’s Technology Transfer Programme Office (TTPO).

Olaf Schmidt, vice president of textiles and textile technologies at Messe Frankfurt, which organises the fairs, says Techtextil will present advances that can benefit “all the fields that are necessary for travel and survival in space”.

There will be four main themes: ‘Mobility’, which provides examples of applications related to movement in space; ‘Clothing’, which covers functional garment textiles such as space-inspired high-tech fashion; ‘Civilisation’, textile products that aid survival such as geotextiles for growing foodstuffs and textiles for medical applications; and ‘Architecture’, applications for homes and infrastructure.
