College to train next generation of UK textile workers

26/01/2017
The Textiles Growth Programme, a UK initiative designed to support the country’s textile industry, has provided funding of £30,000 to establish a new textile academy in Keighley, West Yorkshire.

The academy will be located on the campus of Keighley College, an offshoot of Leeds City College. The grant was awarded after close co-operation with local employers in the textile industry.

“Textiles is a key, growing industry which as a college we need to respond to by making sure there are skilled people ready to enter that industry, said Colin Booth, CEO and principal of Leeds City College.
The academy features a range of textile equipment, including nine industrial sewing machines, a five-metre cutting table and industrial cutting knives.

Students will complete a four-week course, which will teach employability skills, offer work experience, and feature hands-on sessions with the latest industrial equipment. Once they have finished the programme, they will be offered a job interview with a local employer, as well as having the option to progress to a full apprenticeship.
