The material from fabric manufacturer Thread, which collects discarded plastic bottles in Haiti and Honduras and turns it into usable material. The Thread Ground to Good fabric has up to 50% recycled PET from plastic bottles found in streets, canals and neighbourhoods in the two countries.
Timberland announced a collaboration with Thread in June 2016. The resulting collection included four shoe models: The City Blazer Mixed-Media Boots, the Newport Bay Canvas Hiker Chukka, the Newport Bay 6-Inch Canvas Boots and the Newport Bay Canvas Chukka Shoes, which are available in various colourways. It also features bags and apparel.
“The Timberland x Thread collection is incredible proof that style and sustainability can go hand-in-hand,” said Colleen Vien, director of sustainability for Timberland. “This collection delivers good with every fibre, not just by recycling plastic bottles that would otherwise end up littering the streets, but also by creating job opportunities and cleaner neighbourhoods in Haiti.”
The Thread initiative also provides jobs for nearly 3,600 people in the developing world as well as training and micro-loan programmes.
Ian Rosenberger, founder and CEO of Thread added: “Our partnership with Timberland marks a seismic shift in the fashion industry, combining Timberland’s large supply chain and loyal customer base with Thread’s responsible, transparent approach to creating premium fabrics and vital jobs in the developing world. The Timberland x Thread collection is a major step towards improving the way our clothes are made.”
