US textile supply chain employs 565,000 people: NCTO

In his 2017 state of the industry address, outgoing NCTO chairman Robert Chapman, revealed that the textile supply chain in the US employed 565,000 people in 2016. Nearly 114,000 of these were in yarn and fabric production, with a further 131,300 in apparel manufacturing. There were also just under 26,000 in man-made fibres, 126,600 in cotton farming and the related industry, and 52,500 in wool growing and the related industry.
In 2016, exports of textiles from the US were valued at $26.3 billion. This was made up of $4 billion cotton and wool, $4.5 billion yarns, $8.6 billion fabrics, $3.6 billion home furnishings, carpet, and other non-apparel sewn products, and $5.6 billion apparel. The key destinations for these exports were Mexico ($6.3 billion) and Canada ($5.2 billion).
The meeting also saw the election of the NCTO’s leadership team for 2017. William McCrary, chairman and CEO of synthetic fibre company William Barnet and Son, was elected chairman, and Marty Moran, CEO of Buhler Quality Yarns, will serve as vice chairman.
